November offers several reminders of why our work in fire prevention and community risk reduction matters so much.
Later this month marks the anniversary of the Cocoanut Grove nightclub fire in Boston — a tragedy that claimed hundreds of lives and reshaped fire and life safety codes across the country. While Kirstin will share more details about that story, it’s a powerful reminder of how quickly unsafe conditions can turn deadly — and how prevention begins long before an alarm sounds.
This month also marks the anniversary of the MGM Grand Hotel fire in Las Vegas (November 21, 1980), which killed 85 people and injured hundreds more. That fire led to sweeping changes in high-rise fire protection, including requirements for sprinklers and improved smoke control.
Both events highlight the same truth: our best defense is prevention.
As you connect with local businesses and community partners this month, consider using these national observances as touchpoints:
- Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month: Cold weather brings increased use of heating equipment and generators. Encourage residents to check their CO alarms and remind them that CO is odorless, colorless, and deadly.
- National Injury Prevention Day (Nov. 18): A good opportunity to talk about preventing burns, scalds, and home fire injuries — especially among children and older adults.
- Seasonal Fire Safety: The holiday season adds extra risks — from overloaded outlets and extension cords to crowded events and increased cooking. North Dakota also averages several bar and restaurant fires each year, so it’s a good time to review inspection schedules and talk with owners about heating safety and clear exits.
Whether it’s a quiet inspection, a safety reminder at a community event, or a pre-plan review before the holidays, each action reinforces the same goal: saving lives through proactive prevention and strong partnerships.
