Fire Marshal Doug Nelson

Happy New Year!  We have a lot of great things going for the fire service in North Dakota in 2024.  Between Community Risk Reduction, North Dakota Firefighters Association (NDFA) Fire School, further fire prevention efforts in hotels/motels, and working to fill out our Deputy Fire Marshal positions, it is sure to be a busy year!

Governor Burgum has declared January 1-31, 2024 as Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month in North Dakota.  A digital copy of the proclamation has been posted to the Governors Office website here.

CRR week is coming up later this month.  Please join us online for our Kitchen Table meetings where we discuss different CRR approaches fire departments are taking around the State.  Please visit our website to view upcoming events under our CRR tab here.  We are working with other state agencies to ensure we are connecting fire departments and fire prevention to the most necessary places within the State through our Statewide Community Engagement Framework.

NDFA Fire School is coming up at the end of February.  Please check out the courses being offered and keep an eye out for our Basic Fire Investigation Course and our Fire Inspections with the State Fire Marshal Course.  You can find further information on the NDFA website.

The Century Code to share for the month is NDCC 23-09-14.  Some of you may receive monthly reports from us that are being forwarded from the Food and Lodging Division of the Health Department.  These are Excel spreadsheets with some fire code violations listed for restaurants and hotels.  The reason you receive these is that the Food and Lodging Division is required to report to our office under this section of code.  If your community has possible fire code violations listed on these reports, please let us know if you have any questions or need any assistance following up.
