It is that time of year – temperatures are dropping, and winter will settle in for a long stay. As the weather changes, so do the heating needs of buildings, which creates new hazards.  The Fire Code of North Dakota, specifically chapter six, has restrictions and requirements applicable to heating appliances in commercial buildings so you can help keep heating-caused fires to a minimum this year.

Section 603 Fuel-Fired Appliances

  • Addresses fire safety requirements such as installation, clearances, fuel oil storage, chimney care, and portable unvented heaters.
  • Portable unvented heaters are prohibited in assembly, educational, institutional and residential occupancies.
  • The use of portable outdoor gas-fired heating appliances is prohibited from being used inside any occupancy, tents and canopies, or on exterior balconies. When in use, the clearance to buildings or combustible materials is not less than 5 feet.
  • Chimneys and other similar systems shall be maintained so that a fire hazard is not created.

Section 604 Electrical Equipment, Wiring and Hazards

  • Addresses fire safety requirements related to clearance around equipment, labeling of equipment rooms, relocatable power taps (i.e. power strips), extension cords, and portable electric space heaters.
  • A clear space must be maintained in front of electrical service equipment.
  • Relocatable power taps must be equipped with over-current protection and listed with UL 1363.
  • Extension cords are only allowed as temporary power supply and are not to be used for permanent wiring.
  • Portable electric space heaters may not have any combustible materials within 3 feet and must be plugged directly into an approved receptacle.

National trends over the ten-year period of 2012 to 2021:

37% decrease in fires
35% decrease in dollar loss

The national estimates of residential heating fires and losses are trending down. While North Dakota has seen a trending down of dollars lost, the number of incidents has trended up.
